Sigiriya is a historic rock fortress that can be found in Sri Lanka's Central Province in the northern Matale District close to the settlement of Dambulla. A huge granite rock column that stands 180 meters (590 feet) tall dominates this site, which is significant both historically and archaeologically.

The area was once a vast forest, but due to storms and landslides, it was transformed into a hill, and King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) chose it as the site of his new capital. He constructed a huge lion-shaped gateway on a small plateau about halfway up the side of this mountain. This building gave this location its moniker, Snhgiri, or the Lion Rock.
