           Polonnaruwa Sacred City

In the past, Polonnaruwa was also known as Pulathisipura and Vijayarajapura. It is the capital of the Polonnaruwa District in Sri Lanka's North Central Province. The other portion of Polonnaruwa, which is still known as the old royal city of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, is also known as New Town.

Polonnaruwa, the second-oldest of all the kingdoms in Sri Lanka, was initially built as a military outpost by the Sinhalese monarchy. Following the Chola dynasty's successful conquest of the nation's then capital, Anuradhapura, in the 10th century, it was renamed Jananathamangalam. Polonnaruwa's Ancient City has been designated a World Heritage Site.

The "Awakening of Polonnaruwa," a significant development initiative championed by the previous president Maithripala Sirisena, is taking place in contemporary Polonnaruwa. All of Polonnaruwa's areas, including roads, electricity, agriculture, education, health, and the environment, are to be developed, according to this plan.
